Trump possesses many leadership qualities. Trump has been a speaker at many college events. Through his motivational speeches, he voices the many qualities that helped him establish his leadership ability. Trump emphasizes several things repeatedly, “ Never give up, be passionate, keep focused and keep your momentum” (Trump, McIver, 2008 p. 165). Throughout his life, Trump has displayed these characteristics which helps keep him on top.
Trump had reached success through many endeavors. Throughout his life he had various turning points. Trump triumphed in the field of real estate beginning with the renovation of the Commodore Hotel into the Grand Hyatt. Thereafter, he established and owned numerous other properties. He seemed to be on an endless road of success.
Trump’s success, however, fell short in the early 1990’s. At that time Trump was faced with billions of dollars in loans including $975 million personally guaranteed debt (Trump, McIver, 2008 p. 2). According to Trump, his tremendous downfall should not have come as a surprise since he had always had a way of doing things “big.” Trump describes a change in his attitude as the turning point in his near-bankruptcy dilemma. Trump overcame this obstacle by maintaining a positive attitude, keeping momentum and, most importantly, focusing on the solution, not the problem. Trump states, that recovering from near bankruptcy had made him a better businessman and entrepreneur (Trump, McIver, 2008 p. 2). Currently, Trump is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for this financial turnaround.

Donald Trump has been a source of inspiration to many people and I think that his message of never giving up is an important one. Also, I really like that he has passion, momentum, and focus. These are very important leadership qualities and they really point to his ability to maintain success in the face of adversity. The turning points in his life really energized his interest to be a winner and that added an important dimension to his ability to achieve beyond his original goals. The challenges is his life were severe, but he tackled the problems head-on and his decisions helped to strengthen his character.
ReplyDeleteI think that the same can be said of Hillary Clinton. Her success is strengthened by the trials that she has encountered. In a few cases, these were not of her own making, but she tackled them with grace and dignity. Also, many of the turning points in her life helped her to determine what new goals and challenges she would attempt to conqueer next. She has really led a rich life filled with important experiences that all add to her leadership capacities.

ReplyDeleteAs I read your second post regarding Donald, I could not help but connect your ideas to Bennis' basic ingredients of leadership. He certainly exhibits curiosity and daring with most of his business deals. I was just reading how he was trying to take over all this land in Scotland to build a golf course. The whole country was just about against him, however he won them over and now it is going forward. His persistence, another key leadership trait certainly paid off, so to speak.
I see him as a promoter in that he gets people excited and gets them working in the right direction, which is aligned with his vision, and then moves to the next project. This is not to say he abandons them just that he does a good job communicating the mission and vision of his work.

ReplyDeleteThe facts about Trump’s near bankruptcy that you mentioned are incredible. He really is a courageous man for being able to keep a positive attitude as well as being focused on a solution to his problem. I could never imagine the amount of stress he must have been under knowing he was $975 million in debt. When a leader says keep a positive attitude, find a solution, that is one thing. When you see actual real life events that were not just talked about but knowing he followed his own advice, one can’t help but admiring Trump and classifying him as an extraordinary business leader.
